Current Events in Science "Rainbow Colored Honey Anyone?"

RAINBOW COLORD HONEY

In a small town of Ribeauville, France they are known for 35,000 honeybee colonies. The honeybees there produce over 1,000 metric tons of honey each year. Recently they have been finding that the honey has been colorful instead of an amber color. The honey has been shades of blue, green, and red. This was puzzling to many of the beekeepers. After months of investigation they finally figured out the cause of the multicolored honey: M&M's. Because of a harsh 2011-2012 winter there was a depletion of food (sugar) for the bees. So they found a bogas station nearby that proccesses the M&M waste. The colorfulness of the M&M liquid caused the honeybees to produce a colorful assortment of honey. Although the colored honey still tastes like honey, the beekeepers can not sell the product.
